As geopolitical competition, interconnected crises, and the rise of nationalism reshape our global landscape, understanding the forces unravelling the international system apart has become critical.

In his new book, The Divorce of Nations, Ambassador João Vale de Almeida draws on decades of frontline diplomatic experience representing the EU and operating within its institutions (including as Head of Cabinet to President José Manuel Barroso) to analyse these forces and their impact since the turn of the century to the present. From Brexit and Trump to Putin’s foretold yet ignored plans, the book sheds light on the turning points that have brought Europe and the multilateral project to their current juncture, offering invaluable lessons for the leaders who are to navigate it.

This book presentation, convening experts and former diplomats, will explore these lessons, the urgent need for renewed multilateralism, and practical ways diplomacy can resist the divorce of nations.

The presentation will be followed by a light standing reception and book signing with Ambassador João Vale de Almeida.

Participation is open to EPC members and Ambassador Vale de Almeida’s guests only, the media, and EU officials
