EU delegations have been often characterised as a success story of the European External Action Service, bringing important value-added to both the EU institutions and member states. Looking in particular at experiences from Washington and Moscow, the policy dialogue focused on the lessons learnt during the past few years. According to the speakers, member states were fundamental for the success of the transition and delegations succeeded in bringing an added value to EU foreign policy. Delegations were praised for their strong presence on the ground and connection with third states. The speakers called for more involvement from member states, a better connection between delegations and the EEAS and EU training for all diplomats. The discussion was held in conjunction with the publication of a FIIA Analysis ‘Pioneers of a European Diplomatic System: EU Delegations in Moscow and Washington’ by Heidi Maurer and Kristi Raik.
