Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine has fundamentally changed EUrope's geostrategic landscape. So did the war in the Middle East, revisionist Russia, prickly relations with China, and uncertainty about the United States' commitment to European security. This is further compounded by security challenges that range from climate security to migration flows to terrorism to disruptive technologies.
To contribute to the development of a more robust European defence posture, the EPC is launching a security and defence project. The objective is to foster strategic thinking and debates about European security and defence initiatives, while ensuring coherence with the wider EU and NATO policy developments. Ahead of the European Council 2024-2029 and NATO's Summit in Washington D.C., the moment is now to contribute towards a common European strategic defence vision, strengthening NATO and international security.
Mr Timo Pesonen, Director-General for Defence Industry and Space (DEFIS), will deliver an opening statement and shed light on the recent initiatives put forward by the European Commission in the domain of defence and security. The debate will then ensue about the challenges and opportunities confronting the EU as it readies to enhance defence capabilities and reduce vulnerabilities. Panellists will assess the needs of the European security and share ideas about its future.
Participation is open to EPC members, the media, and EU officials.
