Brexit’s other land border: Gibraltar and the future UK-EU relationship

EVENT

Deputy Chief Minister of Gibraltar

Moderator(S)

Fabian Zuleeg
Chief Executive, European Policy Centre

Although it voted 96% to remain in the EU, Gibraltar, like the UK, is set to leave the EU on 31 January 2020. However, Gibraltar shares a land border with the EU and there is a very close economic inter-relationship between Gibraltar and the region next door, with thousands of EU citizens working in Gibraltar and living in Spain and millions of EU tourists visiting Gibraltar every year. Despite the prosperity of thousands of EU citizens from across the EU being affected by the implications of Brexit for Gibraltar, the specific issues concerning this land border rarely hit centre stage in the Brussels arena. Notwithstanding its position away from the limelight, there is significant potential that the approach taken on Gibraltar could make an already complicated negotiation even more complex. Difficulties over Gibraltar could therefore have ramifications for the EU as a whole.

At this Sixty Minute Briefing, Dr Garcia who, as well as being Deputy Chief Minister, is Gibraltar’s Minister with responsibility for Brexit matters, will set out the current position of Gibraltar when part of the European Union, the key issues which arose during the lengthy and complex exit negotiations on Gibraltar and the role that Gibraltar might play in discussions on the future UK-EU relationship. The Briefing will be moderated by EPC Chief Executive Fabian Zuleeg.
