This workshop – organised jointly with the European Roundtable on Climate Change and Sustainable Transition - brought together experts from EU institutions, member states, industry and NGOs to explore how to achieve a just transition towards a climate-neutral economy and society in Europe.
The discussion was structured around three sessions:
1) Overview of the state of play and current developments
2) Case studies from European countries and beyond
3) The role of the EU and member states.
Participants discussed the new proposal on the Just Transition Mechanism, as well as the EU-wide framework and coordination on just transition policies. Some concrete cases were presented as examples of best practice and lessons learned on how to assist states in growing the economy. Participants stressed that just transition should be understood as multiple transitions taking place at the same time. In addition, the importance of consulting the social partners in the drafting and monitoring of just transition policies was underlined.
The event was moderated by Annika Hedberg, Head of Programme for Sustainable Prosperity for Europe programme, European Policy Centre and Andrei Marcu, Director of European Roundtable on Climate Change and Sustainable Transition.
