The Road to the NATO Washington Summit and beyond

NATO leaders meet in Washington, DC, in July 2024 – where they signed the North Atlantic treaty in 1949.

Seventy-five years on, NATO is relevant to European and Euroatlantic security. Within the third year since Russia’s illegal, full-scale invasion of Ukraine, NATO holds a significant and instrumental role in how the Western liberal order survives and what will be the renewed European Security Architecture post-war. With 32 member states, NATO’s mission is still to keep Russia out of sovereign countries in its vicinity. The leaders will discuss the new transatlantic security in the prism of the year of elections on steroids.

The Summit’s priorities include:

  • Ukraine’s path into the Alliance and security guarantees.
  • Defence and deterrence on the Eastern Flank.
  • The defence spending pledge.
  • Future of the Alliance with 32 members.
  • The appointment of the next Secretary General.

Through a mix of activities, the EPC aims to:

  • Identify and analyse the main challenges that NATO faces ahead of the Washington Summit.
  • Assess NATO’s response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and what it must do to keep Ukraine (and the rest of Europe) secure, whole, and free - including Ukraine’s path into the Alliance.
  • Provide a menu of solutions and recommendations for the Alliance to tackle current and future challenges as NATO adapts to an evolving European and global security environment.
  • Contribute to the debate on enhancing NATO-EU cooperation.
This EPC project intends to inform and increase awareness among European citizens on the latest developments in NATO security and defence policies as well as foster cooperation among European and transatlantic think tanks working on these topics.
