The twin green and digital transition is gaining traction. While the EU has been promoting the green and digital transitions separately for a long time, European leaders and policy-makers are increasingly recognising the importance of aligning the two agendas. Better management of data and digital solutions can contribute to climate action and environmental protection by helping make our energy, mobility and food systems more sustainable, while also supporting the circular economy. However, for digitalisation to fully contribute to sustainability, its own climate and environmental footprint will need to be addressed.
The ongoing German EU Council Presidency has chosen the twin transition as one of its priorities and the Covid-19 crisis and the ongoing recovery efforts have provided further momentum for these efforts. The EPC has been supporting the German Ministry for Environment in its efforts through its  Digitalisation and Sustainability project (financed by the BMU) and its findings and policy recommendations can be found in: Towards a green, competitive and resilient EU economy: How can digitalisation help?

At this online Policy Briefing, and just a week before the EU Environment Council on 17 December which will address these issues, Svenja Schultze, the German Federal Minister for Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU), will reflect on the German Presidency’s work in joining the green and digital agendas, as well as the benefits and challenges for the twin transition to create a more sustainable and resilient European economy, in support of the European Green Deal. The event will be chaired by Annika Hedberg, Head of EPCs Sustainable Prosperity for Europe programme.
