The progressive commercialisation of Internet of Things (IoTs) devices has contributed to the creation of “Smart Worlds,” which are usually described as an amalgamation of the physical and digital dimensions. As such, these enriched worlds promise to revolutionise many sectors through the integration of insights obtained from sensors, computers, and displays. Among these is the healthcare sector, where this revolutionary integration of devices could facilitate the creation of interconnected and intelligent environments and enable healthcare stakeholders to significantly enhance patient care, optimise resource utilisation, and improve overall health outcomes.
Despite the significant potential of smart worlds to improve healthcare, and the European Commission’s efforts to spearhead innovation through strategic communications and initiatives; the path forward is not without obstacles. Specifically, there are fundamental concerns surrounding the overall accessibility of data, which is central to drive forward innovation, and practices of data sharing and re-use, which are notoriously difficult to implement in a fair manner.
In this context, the European Policy Centre, with the support of the Vodafone Institute for Society and Communications, established the 'Smart Worlds' project to shed light on the potential benefits and risks of smart health and to chart the way forward for new technologies. During this hybrid Policy Dialogue, the main findings of the project will be presented and discussed with stakeholders. Further discussions will focus on the future of smart health in the European Union and beyond.
Participation is open to EPC members only, the media, and EU officials
