Armenians will head to the polls on 20 June for snap elections called in the middle of a political crisis resulting from the country’s defeat in the 2020 war with Azerbaijan. National security dominates the campaign with all those running– including incumbent Prime Minister, Nikol Pashinyan and his Civil Contract party – promising to recapture the areas of Nagorno-Karabakh that Armenians lost during the war. Crucial domestic questions, including socio-economic challenges and issues related to the rule of the law and democracy have barely figured, despite their importance.
This Policy Dialogue will evaluate the outcome of the elections as well as the election process itself. This will include assessing the priorities and challenges of the new government as well as looking at prospects for Armenia’s relations with partners including the EU, US and Russia.
