Cities can play a significant role in achieving the ambitions of the European Green Deal. They are and can be central players in supporting energy, mobility and food transitions, and enhancing circular economy. Many European cities have launched green transitions through ambitious projects and are working closely with citizens in making these deliver.

Now due to the Russian war on Ukraine, and its efforts to weaponise energy and food, the urgency to mobilise citizens to reduce their demand for resources like fossil fuels is greater than ever. Enhancing dialogue between city authorities and citizens to accelerate transition to a more sustainable future is more needed than ever.

This Policy Dialogue will explore the roles of cities and citizens in delivering the Green Deal. It will build on citizens’ reflections and recommendations put forward during the Conference on the Future of Europe regarding the greening of European cities. Speakers will also cover the state of play in meeting citizens’ expectations and the role of EU policies and investments in constructing green, sustainable and just European cities.
