At their meeting in London last year, NATO leaders agreed to a forward-looking reflection process to increase political consultation and coordination between Allies and strengthen NATO’s political role. While the reflection process is still on-going, the alliance is increasingly challenged by both internal and external problems with, most recently, tensions in the Eastern Mediterranean between Greece and Turkey, both members of NATO since 1952. A number of other Turkish decisions have also caused friction with NATO allies. Turkey’s acquisition of the S-400 system from Russia, and its military operation in northern Syria have raised growing concerns in Washington and Brussels about Ankara’s commitment to the Western alliance and its values. At the same time, Turkey has accused NATO of failing to recognise its legitimate security concerns and failing to act as a proper ally. Is Turkey still a reliable partner for NATO? How important is NATO for Turkey, and what is the best way forward? This on-line Policy Dialogue will address these and other issues.
