In March 2018, the European Commission announced the implementation of #DiscoverEU, a pilot project to enhance European youth mobility. The scheme is inspired by the “FreeInterrail” campaign, which promotes the idea that young people should be able to explore the Union through the use of free Interrail tickets. Since the first application round, more than 70,000 young people have been awarded a free travel pass which allowed them to discover Europe’s cultural diversity and common values. In 2020, the pilot project was put on hold due to the Covid-19 pandemic and is scheduled to return in 2021, possibly as part of the Erasmus+ programme.
This online Policy Dialogue will discuss the current status of DiscoverEU and its future. The two initiators of the FreeInterrail initiative will present a policy paper that seeks to further improve the scheme, while Themis Christophidou, European Commission Director General tasked with implementing the pilot scheme, will give an insight on the implementation and future of DiscoverEU.

The Transnationalisation Programme (TN) facilitates a transnationalised debate on Europe’s key challenges through enhancing collaboration with think tanks and civil society across Europe. Today’s global and societal challenges require transnational policy responses. European think tanks and civil society play an important role in connecting debates across borders and strengthening exchanges between decision-makers and other relevant stakeholders.
