Following Belarus’ rigged elections in August 2020, a democratic crisis erupted between the regime of Alyaksandr Lukashenka and the pro-democratic opposition, which unified around Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya. Protestors have demanded new elections monitored by the international community and have demonstrated incredible staying power. Yet, Lukashenka continues to cling to power with the army and the security services remaining loyal to him. A brutal crackdown against the peaceful protestors has left hundreds incarcerated.

This online Policy Dialogue: ‘Transatlantic and Russian Responses to Crisis in Belarus: What is Next?’ discussed the current situation in Belarus, assessed the impact of EU and US responses to the crisis and the prospects for greater transatlantic cooperation. Speakers also evaluated the drivers of Russian policy and goals in Belarus. “Belarus has forever changed. Is this the end of Lukashenko? Yes. We do not know how long it is going to take, but he is no longer legitimate and now the quest is how exactly do the people get rid of him,” stated Melinda Haring, Deputy Director of Atlantic Council’s Eurasia Center.
