Our speakers will focus their analysis on key topics discussed at the European Council meeting on 21-22 October. Firstly, we will analyse issues related to the COVID-19 crisis with a special emphasis on the vaccine situation and lessons learned regarding vaccination strategies, as well as the question of international solidarity and the need to ensure access to vaccines for all. Secondly, we will discuss the EU’s progress on the digital agenda and how the Union can achieve its goal of ensuring Europe’s digital transformation. Thirdly, we will address the recent hike in energy prices and what measures the EU and its member states can take to address the impact of price increases.

The current EU and UK proposals on the Northern Ireland Protocol wil also be discussed. Are the proposals likely to converge in an attempt to produce an agreed way forward for Northern Ireland or might we face an escalation in tensions that could lead to a break-down in the EU-UK relationship? Last, but not least, we will also deal with the potential implications of the judgement by the Polish Constitutional Tribunal that the Polish Constitution, in some cases, supersedes rulings by the European Court of Justice. How does this decision affect the primacy of European law and how should the European Commission and member states react? What are the potential political consequences for the relationship with the current Polish government and how might this affect Poland’s position in the EU?
