Europeans value health as a key component of well-being. But at the same time many suffer from preventable health problems that lead to sick leaves and early retirement, and are costly for Europe. This must change. The challenges with demographic change rise in chronic diseases and increasing budget constraints mean that Europe must find new ways to promote health and manage the demand on healthcare. In this Policy Brief, Annika Ahtonen and Benedetta Guerzoni analyse the possibilities and challenges with regard to health promotion and prevention of diseases. They consider EU's current role in tackling the causes and development of illnesses, and suggest ways how it could play an even greater role in creating a healthier European society.
