Sustainable Prosperity for Europe

Circular economy and smarter use of resources

Making production smarter - The potential of ecodesign

14 February 2017

This Policy Dialogue sought to discuss the European Commission’s Communication on the ‘Ecodesign Working Plan 2016-2019’, which was announced on 30 November 2016. In addition to making sure that more energy efficient products enter the market, the working plan aims to examine how ecodesign could contribute to the transition towards a circular economy by making products more durable, easier to repair, reuse and recycle. This is all the more important as at least 80% of the environmental impact of a product is determined at the design stage. Panellists reflected on the working plan, the role of ecodesign in making products more energy- and resource-efficient and what more needs to be done to incentivise smarter production processes in the EU.

Speakers included: Romain Pardo, Policy Analyst, European Policy Centre, Michael Bennett, Policy Officer, Ecodesign and Circular Economy, Directorate General for Internal Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship and SMEs, European Commission, Sigrid Linher, Director Energy & Environment, Orgalime, Carsten Wachholz, Senior Policy Officer, European Environmental Bureau, Anne Bonhoff, Global Head of Chemistry, UL
