Sustainable Prosperity for Europe

Economic Policy Forum

Will current austerity measures reduce citizens’ long-term well-being? – Forum meeting

25 November 2010

The question on how should European policy-makers steer public finances back onto a sustainable path, while minimising the negative effect on citizens’ quality of life was at the heart of this forum’s debate. To respond to this question, the meeting looked into the macro-economic consequences and the social effect of the austerity programmes and investigated whether there are ideal policy measures both at national and European levels to facilitate a rapid recovery.
