Entering the end game: the race for Caspian gas

27 October 2010
Borut Grgic (External authors) and Amanda Paul (Senior Policy Analyst)

“Oil is money, gas is politics” is the theme of this commentary by Amanda Paul and Borut Grgic. The EU needs to expand its energy supplies, and there are a number of possible sources ‘out East’. But competition is fierce with both Russia and, perhaps even more dangerously, China hunting the same gas. With a number of EU-backed consortia preparing to enter a bidding war at the end of the year over gas from Azerbaijan’s Shah Deniz II field, the authors argue that the EU needs to find a more pragmatic and realistic solution to energy security, and in particular, Caspian gas.
