President Emeritus of the European Council Herman Van Rompuy becomes new President of the EPC
26 June 2015
The European Policy Centre (EPC) is pleased to announce that Herman Van Rompuy, President Emeritus of the European Council and former Prime Minister of Belgium, will become the EPC’s new President on 1 September 2015.
Following the EPC’s move to Rue du Trône earlier this year, Herman Van Rompuy’s arrival at the EPC marks another milestone in its history. Having recently ended his two-term Presidency of the European Council, Van Rompuy will be actively involved in the EPC’s activities and co-operate with the team to contribute to the EPC’s output and development, helping to deliver its vision of fostering European integration through analysis and debate.
“I consider it an honour to become President of the EPC, a think tank that is at the forefront of discussions on the European Union, leading the debate on topics such as the future of European integration, EU foreign affairs, migration, energy, UK-EU relations, the promotion of economic growth and the future of EMU and the Eurozone. I am very much looking forward to starting our collaboration on 1 September.”
His presidency of the EPC comes after an impressive career in national and European politics; a former economist at the National Bank of Belgium, he began his political career in 1973 as national vice-president of his party's youth council, before holding various responsibilities within his party and in the Belgian Parliament and government, serving in turn as Senator (1988-1995), Secretary of State for Finance and Small Businesses (1988), Vice-Prime Minister and Minister of Budget (1993-1999), Member of Parliament (1995-2009), Minister of State (2004), and Speaker of the House of Representatives (2007-2008). At the time of his first appointment as President of the European Council in 2009, he was Prime Minister of Belgium. He was the first full-time President to take office when the Lisbon Treaty came into force.
“We are all very excited to have him on board. His experience and vast knowledge of European politics and policy-making will decisively enhance the EPC’s ability to impact current and future discussions about the European Union and the many challenges it is facing,” said Fabian Zuleeg, EPC Chief Executive.
Chairman of the Governing Board Poul Skytte Christoffersen, added:“As President of the EPC, Herman Van Rompuy will be a tremendous source of support and advice in the next stage of the EPC’s development.”
