EU-Ukraine: Prospects for the Vilnius Summit - Roundtable

EVENT
Thursday, 16 May 2013

EU-Ukraine relations are heading towards another important crossroads. Over the coming months, in the lead-up to the November Eastern Partnership Vilnius summit, Ukraine’s leadership has serious choices to make. These choices will determine whether Ukraine will be able to sign its Association Agreement and accompanying Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Agreement (DCFTA) with the EU, or whether they will remain on the shelf. Recently, some positive steps have been taken in order to address EU requirements, including President Yanukovych’s decree pardoning former interior minister Yuri Lutsenko along with other opposition members, which have been welcomed by the West. However, there is an urgent need to consolidate Ukraine’s reform process and to end ongoing issues related to selective justice. During this lively roundtable discussion, all participants shared the opinion that there is still time for Ukraine to meet the EU’s criteria and sign the agreements in Vilnius. This roundtable discussion, organised in cooperation with the Ukrainian Politics Foundation, discussed the opportunities and challenges facing Ukraine in the run-up to the November Eastern Partnership Vilnius summit.
